Cross-Cultural Pioneer: Henry Steiner
I recently discovered AIGA|XCD Center for Cross-Cultural Design, I suspect has been established a year ago. The manifesto is promising & I am obviously very glad to see the interest from the design community toward cross-culture, especially if they chose Steiner as an emblem to define the approach.
I am always suspect when I see the word "understanding" next to "cross-cultural" & I also hope the approach will not only be geographic. But as Steiner tells it in his video, cross-culture is about contrast & the effects of creating one thing out of two very different ones, can not fully be controlled or anticipated. The entire work of Steiner based in Hong Kong for the past 40-50 years is all about that contrast. Steiner is responsible for branding HSBC & designing banknotes for the standard chartered bank.
